The same thing happened to me in 92. Either quit my job on Hayman Island or see Maiden in Sydney. It was a no brainer for me.

AND MORE, Looks like no more bands. oh and caliban are doing a sideshow here in melbourne for $20 + bf the night before gigantour. The ad says including special guests from gigantour but I will wait it out to see Mega even if they are the special guests

Gigantour, the roaming metal festival conceived and brought to life by Megadeth vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine as an alternative to the rather stale and predictable Ozzfest, was a huge success on it’s first run from July through to September in 2005 (With the line up of Anthrax, Fear Factory, Nevermore, Symphony X, Life Of Agony, Dry Kill Logic, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Bobaflex, Megadeth and Dream Theater), and with its 2006 return run (From September through to October, and featuring Megadeth, Lamb Of God, Opeth, Overkill, Into Eternity, Sanctity and The Smashup), the alternative tour is unanimously being hailed as an even bigger triumph.
Looking beyond the U.S., Mustaine has decided to bring Gigantour down to Australia for three dates, with Swedish melodic death metal act Arch Enemy, metalcore act Caliban and Brazilian tribal/nu-metal giants Soulfly joining headliners Megadeth on the bill.
As Gigantour pulls into Charleston (North Carolina), I caught up with the relaxed and peaceful Dave Mustaine (Who had just finished off nine holes of golf and a hot shower) to discuss the release of Megadeth’s new album, the band’s live album recorded in Argentina, the move from Sanctuary Records to Roadrunner Records and their impending return to Australian shores with Gigantour.
“Gigantour is about the spirit of heavy metal, not just Megadeth. It’s not about Dave Mustaine. It’s not about any one band. It’s about metal. And the fans understand that. Gigantour has been fantastic and beautiful. We’ve seen fans sacrificing cattle and young critters, so everything’s been perfect. And that Gigantour spirit is so dominant in Australia. Australia’s a very hardcore country, with a huge number of metal enthusiasts. They deserve this. It’s been a long time coming for fans down there to have a festival that’s pure metal, without the bullshit. They need the real deal, and you know what? I’m just the kind of guy to help them get it together. We’re getting into partnerships with the promoter down there right now to make Gigantour an annual thing. This is something that’s going to continue on every year now. We only have a couple more shows to go and then we’re heading down your way. The Big Day Out will soon become the small day out motherf**kers.”
It’s been eighteen months since they last visited Australian shores (Back in April 2005 on their Blackmail The Universe World Tour), and according to Mustaine, another tour of Australia is well overdue.
“I’ve always found Australia to be quite a misunderstood country. People don’t realise that it has all the beauty and charm of England, but the sex appeal of being at Venice Beach (California). The people there are all healthy and good looking. I also love that mentality your government has, which is ‘Well if you don’t want to be Australian, then get the f**k out!’ Bravo! That’s Dave Mustaine like politics right there. I’m so happy to be coming back, because Australia really is a fantastic country.”
Much like their last tour (Where the band performed My Last Words from 1986’s Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?), it would seem that Australian fans can expect a couple of surprises with Megadeth’s return this time around too.
“Well, we’re going to play some more of the older songs, but we’re going to do some stuff off the new album as well. Hopefully we’ll be doing a little more off the new album than what we have so far. So far, we’ve only played Washington Is Next. There’s a concert we’ll be doing on Halloween when we get back from the Australian tour, so we may just sneak in a second new song just for the Australian fans. It’s sort of the same thing we did with My Last Words the last time we were down there. I’ve never been a con or a cheat when it comes to my music. I’ve always been really gracious and loving to the fans, and treated them fairly as I can. And my Australian fans are no different. If you’re any kind of fan you know that. So I’m just getting on and doing my thing and having fun.”
Speaking of new material, according to Mustaine, Megadeth’s upcoming album United Abominations is almost complete.
“There’s a couple of little things that need to be finished, but as soon as they’re done, we’ll start mixing it. What I can tell you though is that this new album isn’t anything like The System Has Failed (Which was released in 2004). I love this album! This album makes my nipples so hard you could use them to cut glass. I’m totally excited by this album. But having said that, I’m not going to tell you what it sounds like, because if I say it sounds like this, you’re only going to say that it sounds like that. We should just sit down, have a couple of drinks and listen to it together. It’s only then that know what I’m talking about, and I can watch as the album socks you in the face! (Laughs)”
And more importantly, it actually has a release date.
“United Abominations will be released in March. I hate those phrases which say sometime early next year, maybe, could, unknown, as of yet and temporarily. If I have to get out there like The Naked Cowboy (Who is otherwise known as Robert Burck) in Times Square (New York) and sing in my underwear, this album will be released in March. While there’s a lot of girls that would line up to see me singing in my underwear, I would like to avoid that and see the album come out officially.”
What also makes United Abominations so interesting is that it’s Megadeth’s first release on Roadrunner Records following the demise of Sanctuary Records.
“It’s funny, because it was the second attempt that Roadrunner Records had at signing Megadeth. The first time was some twenty odd years ago. It’s strange, because they were one of the first guys to ask me to the dance, and they’ll now be the last guys to ask me to the dance. I’ve pretty much reached the point where I want to stay with the one label for the rest of my recording life. I now think I’ve found the place where I want to be. I’m just hoping that the integrity I’ve seen so far is consistent, because I’m really, really happy. They’re really doing the right thing by me. You know me. I’m pretty much transparent. You don’t have to ask Dave Mustaine what he’s thinking. So far, Roadrunner Records and I are getting along really good, and hopefully that continues beyond the release of United Abominations”.
Just prior to the release of United Abominations, Megadeth plan to release a live effort entitled That One Night: Live in Buenos Aires (Both on C.D. and D.V.D.) through Image Entertainment.
“That comes out soon. The main focus of that is the D.V.D., not so much the C.D. The C.D. is purely for the collectors out there who want to have the audio component as well as the visual. The visual show is what it’s all about. I think most people want to see what a real Megadeth audience looks like, and this is it. I mean, I’ve been bragging about them for the last fifteen years. People want to see who these f**kers are! (Laughs) I can guarantee you that when you see this show, you’re going to say, ‘Oh my God! Mustaine was right!’ We’re mental on the stage, right? But those f**king Latinos man, they’re on something. There’s something in the water! They’re passionate. No wonder the Latino women are so fierce.”
In regards to the future, Mustaine’s plan for Megadeth are centred around the planning of a third Gigantour festival, which will include another visit from the band.
“As soon as we finish the Australian tour, we’ll head home and finish up the few bits and pieces left to do on United Abominations ready for its official release. Then we’ll be heading out on tour once again around March with the third Gigantour festival. As it stands, Megadeth won’t be the headliner. Right now, I’m not too sure who will headline. And even if I did know, I wouldn’t say whom because while they’re hot property right now, they could suddenly go Hugh Grant and pay somebody to go suck their dick, or pay somebody for some companionship. All of a sudden you have a headliner who’s no longer a true contender for Gigantour, and I don’t want that. So until I say so, I’ll be a bit of a mystery. But having said that, we’ll be headliners for the Australian Gigantour next year, and it’s safe to say that we’re already looking forward to that!"
