Thank you all for your support, Kai is still in intensive care in a stable but critical condition he is still on heart bypass but given his progress it looks as he will be coming off it real soon. Mick

Kai returned to the Hospital to have his fifth operation for the definitive repair of his heart condition. The operation took place on Tuesday, 4 November. Upon completion of his heart surgery, Kai was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit – then one hour later, he suffered a major cardiac arrest requiring internal cardiac massage (yes the reopened his chest there and then on the ward). Kai’s best chance of survival was to be placed on the Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine – a special heart-lung bypass technique that effectively replaces the heart and lung function. Within a very short time, Kai was functioning on the ECMO machine, which contains a pump that acts as an ‘artificial heart’, an oxygenator that acts as an ‘artificial lung’, and a heater to warm the blood before returning it to the body. And with the ECMO taking over the work of circulating oxygen throughout his body, Kai’s heart and lungs were given a chance to rest and recover. It was the only way to keep him alive. Kai was kept pain-free with strong pain relievers and given muscle relaxants to avoid movement that would put pressure on his wound. He was also put on a ventilator to support his lungs and constantly monitored. Over the next two weeks, several attempts to wean Kai off the ECMO proved unsuccessful. Finally, the decision was made for one final attempt on Monday, 17 November – and the expected outcome was not at all hopeful. Miraculously enough, on 17 November, Kai surprised his family, his medical team and everyone involved in his care, when he successfully came off the ECMO in reasonably good shape and remained in a stable condition. Once again, our little ‘fighting angel’ had proven to everyone that he wasn’t quite ready to give up! At present, Kai’s heart appears to be functioning adequately, but his lungs are not doing well and he’s still not completely out of danger. He remains on a ventilator as he needs quite a lot of oxygen and he is sedated to aid his progress. He will need to be gradually weaned off the ventilator, depending on how his lung function progresses. Kai is now off the ventilator and is on a ventilator mask needing to gain weight to regrow muscle tone he is still in intensive care and will be for quite a while yet thank you for all your continued support
