When this happened, I felt it was my duty to divulge it to those who would share the same disbelief I would.
My mother is a music teacher. For a class of hers, she gave them a listening test. She would make them listen to a variety of songs, from all over the spectrum of music (well, ok, it was 6 songs in total). Then the students had to answer questions on each piece. There were things like "What instruments were used?", "What part of the song were they used for?", "Name one Good/Bad thing about it", and etc... The final question they had to answer for each song was "What audience would enjoy this type of song?"
One of the songs my mother gave them was Gangland, by Iron Maiden (*I feel I should point out that when she mentioned this, I told her that I loved her very deeply for her choice*). She knows I love Iron Maiden, and found one of the student's answers amusing. For the question "What type of audience would enjoy this song?", one of the kids answered..... "Goth / Emo".
.................
My reaction was pretty much what your (the reader's) reaction must be right now. A combination of "What the F**k!?" and "Hahahaha". But mostly "What the F**k!?". Since when have people thought of Iron Maiden as Goth or Emo? Have I sat inside too long to miss the sudden shift of the music audience to go from stupid to completely ignorant of other styles? (I realise this is a rather broad and harsh generalisation, but damnit, I am not a happy chappy).
My faith in humanity has died a little today.

Perhaps you need to know the background of the kid who answered?

I think the point here is that kids these days don't know anything different than goth/emo when it comes to heavy music. There simply is very limited "metalheads" and "bogans" these days like there were when we were growing up, and I think the general conception of heavy music these days (given whats on TV and radio) is associated with EMO/goth fans.

The only thing most people seem to know about our beloved maiden is: "I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden baby..."

Of all the emos at work, they don't know a F**kin thing about Maiden except for the "Edward The Great" compilation. But they wear the Maiden t-shirts because it looks cool and they have to keep up with what all the other emo/hardcore F**kwits are doing. This one dickhead at work even has Eddie tattooed on his leg but he didn't even know what the hell a Rime Of The Ancient Mariner was.
