I just read up a little more about this, and while it's pretty ironic seeing the concert was going to be on Australia day, that day more than any day Aussies should celebrate being Australian, The guy who called for the ban was only trying to not get elitism or racism going on - if they were allowed to fly the flag, and then a group of ethnics or some non-Australian people for some bizzare reason take offense to Aussies celebrating their own country ON Australia day, one thing leads to another, and you have a massive riots and gangs where people get injured, then fair call to stop that sort of pride. It's pretty sad that you can't fly your own countries flag in your own country, but it's more sad that people use it to start a sort of 'Aussies are better than everyone' or non-Aussies see it and get offended by it, and it starts violence.
Of course I think australians should be able to celebrate our country, more so because it's Australia day, but really any time in Australia, but it's people who are in Australia who hate Australia for no good reason, that ruin it... and it's probably better that you don't have racial intolerance-fuelled riots and massive fights... I think who ever instated the ban is just trying to avoid that.

Taken from the Big Day out website -
The Big Day Out would like to offer the following to clarify its position on "flag banning" at the Sydney show.
Contrary to the reports in the media, it was never our intention to disrespect the symbolism of the Australian or any other flag.
We are not banning the Australian flag but are simply discouraging its use for anti-social purposes at the Big Day Out.
We state unequivocally that flags will not be banned at any Australian Big Day Out show in the foreseeable future.
In recent times, there has been an increased incidence of flags brandished aggressively and this has led to increased tension. Our only intention in discouraging this activity at the Big Day Out is to ensure that our patrons are not subjected to this aggressive behaviour.
With all this in mind and the aim to create a happy, peaceful MUSICAL event, organisers would like to request that fans please leave their flags at home.
The Big Day Out is not an Australia Day event, but a music festival showcasing music artists from around the world and aspires to unify people through music.
Unfortunately the media reports yesterday were not quoted accurately and we must thank the participating media for wasting everybody's time including the Prime Minister John Howard, Premier Morris Iemma, NSW RSL President Don Rowe, Keysar Trad (a confidant of the Mufti Sheik Taj el-Dene Elhilaly) and Burt Lane of the Australian National Flag Association...

By discouraging flag use, they will only get more flags at their event, quite simple. A stupid moveby the organisers.

You're probably right Adrian, but I'm guessing they're going to confiscate them at the entrances so unless someone's got an Aussie flag shoved up their ass ready to pull out once inside - there might not be many... But hey, what better way to show your patriotism then going to such means just to bring an Aussie flag to an event! hehehe

Lol
I just had this vision of someone getting a flag pulled out of their arse, like a magician does with the linked hankies out of a hat. But seriously...it's madness. Political Correctness has got to stop. You can only compromise so far, before it starts to cull the local culture of all its rights. Bending over backwards to immigrants is not the answer.

... Bending over backwards to immigrants is not the answer. Speaking of flags in arses Blimey! I'm offended, and I aint even Aussie! I was proud to hold up the Aussie flag at the Maiden gig in my own home country... nobody seemed to have a problem with it at all (except maybe Steve when it got shoved in his face : p). Dumb pricks. Discourage anti-social behaviour in GENERAL and don't focus on flag waving. Then put your efforts into crowd control so people don't get crushed and killed. (Exemplary job done by the dudes in Sweden - crowd was divided into sections so there was less weight on any crush that might occur, dudes were flat-out pouring water into the gobs of people about to faint, small girls were rescued at the first sign of distress, everyone was fine despite the overly enthusiastic drunk Swedish lads!) Didn't some poor girl die at the BDO one year...?

If they confiscate flags at the entrances of the venue, then they have BANNED flags.

Yeah it's F**ked. Apparently Howard and Rudd both ripped into the guy saying he's not an aussie and he needs a right kick up the ass (not in those exact words obviously). I'd take as many as I could possibly hide if I was going, and F**kin post em up high.
